09 Jan Celebrating Mr. Henry Chan’s 90th Birthday
A few months ago, we had the privilege of celebrating Mr. Henry Chan’s 90th birthday—a milestone for a man affectionately known as Uncle Henry. As one of the founders of The Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum in Melaka and a beloved figure in our community, Uncle Henry’s big day was nothing short of special.
The celebrations were divided into two memorable events. The first half took place at the museum, where every detail was thoughtfully prepared to make the day special. The tables were beautifully set, creating an elegant and inviting space for family and friends. Guests were welcomed with a comforting bowl of Mee Suah, followed by a feast of Peranakan delights. Jennifer Tan of Donald and Lily wowed everyone with her signature Nyonya Laksa, while Uncle Henry’s missus, Aunty Nancy treated everyone to her delicious Nyonya snacks and delicacies.
As the evening unfolded, the festivities moved to The Bendahari, a vibrant community space managed by Uncle Henry’s daughter, Melissa Chan. The second half of the celebration was a lively affair, with delicious food, snacks and refreshing beverage catered by Bulldog Malacca and The Pie Tee. A live band set the perfect tone, filling the air with music, laughter, and energy as guests mingled and danced.
One of the most touching moments of the evening was Uncle Henry’s heartfelt speech. With warmth and admiration, he spoke about Aunty Nancy and the incredible journey they’ve shared. His words were a beautiful tribute to their enduring love and partnership.
Later, as the band played Bengawan Solo, a song close to Uncle Henry’s heart, he gently took Aunty Nancy by the hand and led her to the dance floor. Watching them sway together, it was a tender reminder of the deep bond they share—a love as timeless as the melody itself.
The day was filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories, brought to life by the wonderful Peranakan food, classical music, and warmth of everyone who came together to celebrate. I feel incredibly honored to have been invited to capture such a joyous occasion. Melissa shared with me that the last big celebration for Uncle Henry was a decade ago, on his 80th birthday—a reminder of how special this milestone truly was.
Thank you, Uncle Henry, for letting us be a part of your beautiful journey, and to Melissa for her dedication in making it all come together so perfectly.
